Subject: Diesel fuel and the independent or small company trucker

Driftless SW Wisconsin

I have a 100 gallon transfer tank on my farm truck (2010 Dodge Cummins) which is my farm diesel supply for tractors and track loader. Mostly I produce and feed hay to my beef herd.

Everything was about empty today after putting out hay with the JCB so I took my truck a few miles to fill up the transfer tank. I always question whether or not it's worth the near 20 miles each way or 40 mi total to go to the nearest station with off-road/dyed diesel.

Road diesel was 4.799/gal, I ended up putting just 26 gallons when the pump shut off at $125.00 on my credit card! $125 for just 26 gal of fuel!  I figured that would take care of the track loader for awhile, I couldn't bring myself to put around $460.00 into that transfer tank right now.

It got me thinking about how anyone can make a living as an independent or small company trucker these days. Have freight rates gone up enough to cover these fuel prices? I feel for the guys with a diesel pickup and big livestock trailer that haul cattle to and from farms and sale barns here.

Freight costs affect just about everything we buy and most freight moves by diesel fuel.
