Subject: RE: landlines AT&T

Until just a few years ago ATT landline service at my place here in California was excellent. The last 3 or 4 years not so much. Outages as long as 2 weeks. No cell service in reasonable distance of the house in inclement weather events like flooding.

We have Viastat dish internet that also gives trouble in rainy weather. With a Smart phone the son that helps can get service in the house if the internet is working, and power is not off. Pacific Gas and Electric has been pretty good at keeping the power on. But with them getting blame for wildfire they are adding auto shut offs in case of wind. They are almost experimental, so lots of random power outages. They will not try to turn lines back on until fiscal inspection has happened. A lot of it by helicopter in day lite hours. We are at the end of a line. If power is off and we hear a low helicopter generally the power will come on in 5 to 10 minutes.

So past 65 with some heath issues it gets a bit scarry to think about to much. If we change internet currently Starlink looks as good without knowing all the details. And smart phones that my wife opposes vehemently. Then some type of solar battery pack to power for emergencies.

As I understand the state has not gone for the no landline from ATT. But when it is out for over a week how much is it doing. Plus the bill is enough to choke a horse. But more than 1/2 is "fees" for about a dozen things that do nothing for us.
