Subject: landlines AT&T

95 miles NW of Quitaque, TX
You do know that AT&T has been trying for years to get out of the landline business. Keeping all the wire, and poles up is probably a pain. I do not think my fiber internet even has landlines for homeowners except for businesses.

AT&T is actively phasing out traditional copper-wire landline services ("Plain Old Telephone Service" or POTS) across most of the U.S., aiming to exit the business by the end of 2029. The company is transitioning customers to fiber-based or wireless voice-over-internet (VoIP) options, stating that copper systems are too costly to maintain and unreliable.

Key Details on the AT&T Landline Phase-Out
Timeline: Most traditional copper-wire landlines will be phased out by the end of 2029.
Immediate Impacts: As of late 2025, new, traditional landlines are no longer available in many areas, and current customers may be unable to make changes to their existing service.
Service Changes: Letters are being sent to customers stating that their service will be discontinued "on or after March 15, 2027" in some regions.
Alternatives: AT&T is pushing customers toward "AT&T Phone - Advanced" (a wireless-based option) or fiber-based voice services.
Exceptions: California has seen intensive hearings regarding this transition, though the goal of exiting the copper network remains a national strategy.

What This Means for You
Costs: Traditional landline costs have increased significantly to encourage customers to switch.
Equipment: While VoIP options often work with existing phones, they require a cellular or internet connection and will not work during a power outage without battery backup.
Business Impact: Small business owners are being encouraged to move to VoIP solutions or digital phone systems
