Fontanelle, IA | Tex - I do agree with you but don’t have any scientific evidence to support it. My guess is the 100 day corns that get frosted in MN and the dakotas yearly take cold stress a lot better than 115-120 day corns simply due to their differences in pedigree backgrounds (flint vs Southern).
Probably similar to why those same short season corns don’t take heat as well as the full season maturities do.
Granted, there are anomalies ie: 100 day moves south of zone well” or a 115 crm that moves “northward of zone well”
Selfishly, The really difficult part in hearing about freeze damage potential in the Deep South - also means more potential replant seed needs.
Now, a seed industry that has worked the past 15-20 years to draw down carryover inventory piles and has banked on great pollination to generate “fresh” seed supply piles is now in a dangerous position where germ issues/quality supply of seed is precariously tight…. So we all pray that a late freeze in the northern belt does NOT occur… | |
