Would argue the art of judging distance is independent of implement width. Have hand steered my 24-row planter along field edges, power poles and around curves just fine. Yes, it is more difficult than a tillage tool because one can't easily see where the outside row is landing but it's not impossible. What works for me is using a spot on the front of the planter toolbar to use as a frame of reference to align with the field edge.
