Do you have people in your area who would want to buy small bales of straw?  Instead of trying to grow hay, why don't you grow straw to sell?  Rye, wheat, oats.... whatever.... you don't need to harvest the grain.... just the small grain crop after it heads out, let it lay out to dry and bale it.  

 



This might be the best idea.


BUT --the hay buyers will hate you MICE love un thrashed heads of wheat


Oat straw with some leftover oats is the best bed and breakfast for mice, IMHO.
