Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | I echo Shop Teacher's comment about using an Ag Leader Null modem gender changer. This is because Ag Leader took certain "liberties" with the standard and uses two often unused pins for power and ground.
In certain combinations having power/ground on those pins can do damage. The genuine Ag Leader Null Modem Gender changer does not include the power and ground connections so the "new" extra device will not cause any problems.
Another approach is to purchase a generic 9 pin Null Modem Gender Changer and clip pins 4 & 6. Often it is easier to clip all pins but 2,3 & 5 as those pins are used to transfer the data. Having the other pins clipped will prevent power/ground issues.
I used to make mine own. I started with a pair of 9 pin connectors with male pins and clipped all the pins but 2, 3 and 5. Pin 2 on the left connector is wired to Pin 3 on the right connector. Pin 3 on the left connector is wired to Pin 2 on the right connector. Pin 5 goes to Pin 5 (signal ground). The swap between Pins 2 & 3 creates the "Null" portion of the connection. This means that Tx (transmit) from one device goes to the Rx (Receive) on the other device.
