E.Central MN | A while back when corn prices were higher, a former teacher was looking for an older JD combine (6620) so he could help his son get started in farming. A different guy told his son that instead of farming their land every year he had an offer from a beet farmer that would trade his acres for twice as many acres that needed to be rotated away from beets. If his son wanted to farm then they would trade acres with the beet farmer, if not then they rented their acres out. Just because a farmer owns or inherits land doesn't mean the best decision is for him or his kids is to farm it if there are better opportunities available. I have a neighbor that's been raising hogs for a long time, he got wiped out during the Covid packing plant shutdowns. I don't know if that happened to a lot of other guys or if he just wasn't very good at managing his money, I thought he would have built up a lot of equity after that many years. | |
