WCIL | Around here the St Louis TV news weather guys are showing a drought map at least every day. It's not just the farmers talking how dry it is. The last few crop seasons we have had timely rains to raise a good crop in most places, but bigger picture we are in a drought and subsoil is very dry. Ponds, creeks and rivers are way low affecting barge traffic and have been for several months. Tiles are not running (extremely rare this time of year). Had 8-10 inches of snow that finally melted and zero run-off. In fact, when the snow was melting and dirt was beginning to show in the plowed fields, it was grayed off quickly. Not sure I've ever seen that before. Snow melt always seems muddy and sloppy in my memory. No doubt, we could be swimming in a day's time, but at this point in time, we are extremely dry. As a river bottom farmer, I like it a little on the dry side as long we get some timely rains. However, there is some deep recharge needed which will no doubt give us plenty to do pumping and draining when it happens. | |
