A lot of time it isn't missteps, it's circumstances beyond their control that forces desicions you have to make to survive or sell out a long time ago.
There is a 74 year old operator who got this far along keeping the family farm alive without a viable exit plan.
Where the kids ever interested? Where there nieces and nephews who may have been at one time? Can't answer either one, but one thing is for sure the generation behind him is now old enough and removed from the farm long enough that's not a viable option either. All of this was within their control at one time, not outside of it.
First ingredient to a crap show is get 37 cousins
(and their spouses
) to be equal owners on the same property and that's where this is headed.
