I agree it is an indirect payment to the insurance company.
If I had taken the money and put it in the bank, I would be about even. IF I had invested it or been working on borrowed money, I would have been ahead to not had it.
That brings up another point. Some of the guys that are highly leveraged would not be bidding up rents.
I always used to figure $20 an acre margin to cover my mistakes
Throw in the time I have spent dealing with it and even at the subsidized price, it is a loser.
The one thing that makes it attractive yet is when I quit farming, I can say my ground has an APH of XXX.
