mercer county, il
Honestly, “here” when I pick up a new farm, I generally straight rate the majority of the farm, and do check strips. Keep a notebook with me at all times, and make notes.

There’s obviously a correlation between OM, and N rates, but weather, drainage, compaction etc all play into it.

Flat black muscatine soils, in a good year 160 units will make 250+bu corn. 50 feet away on the 18% slope of hickory clay, 220lb/n will make 220 in a good year. But in a really wet year, the seeps in the hickory soils won’t make much at all.

Usually I try to average 75-80% of my aph in N. So a 230 aph, 175-185 lb of N. The sandy farms, and farms with more timber soil will be higher though.

And in my opinion, if you’re variable rating N, you really need to be variable rating S as well. The spots that take more N to grow a crop will need more S in the same spots “here”
