Subject: RE: Reliance overhaul kits

Farming in NW Iowa
Orings were a problem in my first experience with Reliance too.

Maybe 20 years ago had a 1066 getting coolant in the oil. Did a complete overhaul with Reliance kit. Used the John Deere soap on the 3 sleeve orings. Got about 120 hours and coolant in the oil again. After disassembly took orings out of sleeve grooves and they just crumbled apart. Took them to the machne shop that did the head work and he said it's like they had brake fluid on them. Showed him what was used and he advised getting oem rings and putting together. Has maybe 1200 hours since then with no issues.

Later on had an 826 IH German diesel. Complete kit as before. Head was planed and valve job, tapped all head bolt holes and reassemble. 45 hours and head gasket blew between number 3 and 4. That's not a weak spot on that engine. It was a Glaser brand gasket? Never heard of them before. Went to CIH and got a FelPro set.

Both times I tried to get anything out of Reliance it was denied. It's always the installer's fault. Improper oring installation? How can that be messed up? On the 826, head not torqued proerly, warped block, warped head, foreign material on gasket surface... Anything they can think of to get out of it.

I'll do what I can to avoid Reliance if possible.
