Subject: RE: TRUMP on Diesel Engine DEF delete?

I had not heard that the industry had asked for that. That is good news! Is this the first time they asked for that? Has there been an answer yet from the Trump administration?

Maybe I’m being to critical but I imagine that the drive to change is because Trump is taking a stance somewhat against the industry because of the enormous cost in productivity to a lot of sectors that is causing the vast majority of people to bypass those systems once warranty is expired. That isn’t good for parts sales. Lol. The industry is quite likely doing it out of self preservation and not out of concern for those using their systems. If they can keep people from deleting the systems they stand to make a lot more money because those systems are very expensive to maintain as they age. If the taxpayer pays the bill instead of the industry they will sell a lot more parts.

I know about the 5 year warranty. I don’t know anyone that doesn’t and I’m surprised that some dealerships wouldn’t know about that. Some of my repairs were covered by warranty, some were not.

The cost of def for the cnh stuff adds up quick. They may get away from having a dpf system but they do drink a lot of def fluid. Apparently that is a trade off for not having to also use a dpf system.

The only agco machine I have is a Massey 9740 swather. That thing does sip the def fluid. I did have the def pump go bad and it was quite pricey but thankfully it was covered by warranty. It does have a dpf system also though. I only have about 1300 hours on it now and other than the pump I haven’t had any issues.

One thing that annoys me though is that because I have to run it wide open to keep the exhaust hot enough to keep the emission system happy it means it is using more fuel. It could do the job at a lower rpm with about 70% of the fuel cost. It currently is the only piece of equipment that I have on the farm that hasn’t lost those nonessential parts though so you might be onto something with that brand.

In my opinion today’s modern computer controlled common rail engines can reduce emissions enough that we don’t need to saddle them with the def and dpf systems. Those systems all have an environmental cost of their own. There is an environmental cost to manufacturing and maintaining those systems. There is an environmental cost to manufacturing and distributing the def itself. They require extra fuel usage when an engine is under light load to keep exhaust temps high enough to keel them working properly. There is a high productivity cost when they fail, although you mentioned that maybe that will be somewhat mitigated.

Anyways, that is just my experiences and my opinions. They also aren’t worth more than anyone else’s either.
