Since you asked, I assume you already know part of the answer....I don't exactly, but I'm going to assume the goal is to get regeneration temperatures high enough to more thoroughly burn off the particulates than what the engine could do on it's own?

At the end of the day, I FEEL it's not all about total emissions, but the perception of the public of the emissions standards that OTHERS are required to meet. How many standards have been imposed on Diesel engines over the past 30 years vs Gasoline engines? Why are engines under 22hp exempt? Is it because they don't pollute, or because then it would affect enough people they might revolt if every leaf blower, push mower, etc had to double in cost every 5 years to meet an ever changing requirement?

Sorry, got my tinfoil hat out for a second there!
