Until recently, I wouldn't have worried about degradation in storage.

However...I purchased a used electric (3hp, TEFC) motor last spring, brought it home and powered it up...it ran fine. So I let it sit on the garage floor for less than a year, and I went to move it a couple months ago and noticed the shaft didn't move a bit. I took it apart and realized that the moist environment had promoted enough rust build up on the armature and stator to fill the gap and seize it up. A little sanding freed it up.

I reckon different manufacturers and different sized motors would mandate different armature/stator clearances, so some motors may not have that problem.
