How do you handle people stopping by your shop and taking up your work time? I have a big problem with it and don’t know how to handle it short of coming across as rude.

I slowly transitioned from a full time in-town job to full time farming over the past several years. I handle my farm day just like I handled my in-town job day….a regular lunch hour and being as productive as possible all day. My days are planned out in advance with obvious flexibility for issues that pop up. My shop is very visible and located close to the main road. People stop in all the time.

I make time for landlords if they stop and visit. I absolutely despise when anyone else thinks it’s ok to come in and stay for hours. I suppose it’s up to me to set boundaries. The farm shop is a place of business. We don’t stand around and drink beer and shoot pool all winter. In my opinion, it would be like me stopping by the local doctor’s office and walking to the back and visiting with the doctor and nurses while they are taking care of patients. I feel like hanging a sign on the door that says open by appointment only.

I don’t want to be the county jerk though. So what methods have you used to deal with this?
