Subject: RE: Ice Storm Pics from MS Delta

Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS

I'm about five miles north of Boyle in Cleveland. Living in town it hasn't been quite as bad. We only lost power for about 12 hours. Lost power sometime Saturday night. It came back on about 3:00 pm Sunday afternoon. We have a gas log fireplace and gas water heater so we had heat and water. Was without cell service for a few days but could still use WiFi texting and calling since CSpire is underground. Some folk in town still do not have electricity, especially down Memorial Drive, which leads to Boyle. Lots of big, OLD, oak trees down that street. Almost any kind of storm causes grief down that street. Those trees were planted to honor the veterans of WWI, which makes them a little over 100 years old. They are getting brittle. As the photographer mentioned, out in the country it can be much worse. I went out to visit a couple of church members on Wednesday. Counted 12 utility poles on the ground along Rosemary Road. Their electric came back on while I was there.

My mom lives up in Prentiss County (NE MS about halfway between Tupelo and Corinth). They actually got more tree damage than we did, primarily because they have more trees. She's out in the country about 10 miles south of Booneville and 10 miles east of Baldwyn. Still no power in her neighborhood. She has propane heat so that's not a problem. Couple of my nephews got her hooked up with a generator a couple of days ago. It's not powerful enough to run everything so she's probably going to lose most of what she has in two chest type freezers and two refrigerators. Her stove is electric so they got her a camp stove to cook on. I was living in NY during the "ice storm of 94" that everyone talks about around here. Dad was still alive at that time and my sister's three kids (two boys and a girl) were living with them at the time. They were two weeks without power. They did their cooking on a Coleman camp stove for that time. The main problem is to keep the water pipes from freezing. As long as you have water, heat, and some means of food prep you can make it okay.
