Subject: Will humic address soil compaction

Sask
Or do I need another product?

Would like to try adding a granular product to the seed row to try and address compacted clay soils around low spots created by equipment traffic turning. No-till, seed with disc drill, wheat barley flax peas on Canadian prairies.

I rip the compacted areas in late fall some years when weather permits. Only tool I have is a cultivator with 2" spikes I can get down 8 to 10", this helps loosen soil and allow water infiltration to flush salts down. Severely compacted ground the water runs off, next stage of improvement is where wheat will germinate, get to about 4 leaf stage and show signs of stress, then kochia takes over and chokes out everything else.

Would prefer looking into alternative solutions to cropping and ripping when conditions are favourable. Can add granular product using spare available tank on air seeder, not set up for any liquid application.

Attached a pdf of soil samples done on the compacted areas (red numbers) vs the low spots (green numbers) a equipment pass width away from the compacted areas. The low spots will generally produce well if not flooded at seeding or during a rain event. Compacted areas grow nothing or else kochia. 10 to 15 samples were taken in the two kinds of areas in one field to give an approximate idea of what I am dealing with. All the other data on the sheet is from typical crop production areas of some other land.

Nutrients are there in the compacted areas however appear to be tied up and only kochia benefits. Thinking a granular humic may be worth trial runs but maybe I need something else?
