Subject: RE: Safe withdrawal rate for retirement

John, there has been a generally accepted "4% rule" floating around amoungst advisors for over 30 years. A planner by the name of Bengen hatched the concept. Basically premise a portfolio should last for 30 years. Emphasis on should. Order of returns risk has plenty to say about how things actually turn out. The rise in interest rates has been a godsend for my retiree clients. Wife and i just set aside a good chunk last week with Equitrust, varied the maturities in fixed annuities, from 5 to ten years locked in rates, from 5.25-5.5%, tax deffered. So we have the option to start withdrawls of interest only in 12 months, substantially higher than Morningstars suggested equities withdrawl rates,(about 38% higher) with zero order of returns risk. And if we dont, no 1099 shows up in the mail. Thats pretty nice feature. Rather comforting to not have to worry about markets crashing in retirement.
