South Central Iowa | Heard the same thing when I used to shuttle Grandpa and grandma to doctor visits in Des Moines (I was a farmer, so I "didn't have to take time off work" like the rest of the family). We'd be bogged down in traffic at 10 am on a Tuesday and Grandpa would say jokingly "Doesn't anybody up here WORK?" The amount of traffic by his house on a gravel road always drew comments too, but then we'd talk about when they were young, most in the rural area were couples that had a stay at home wife, kids rode the bus to school, and most of the rural men were at home on the farm. Now both spouses commute, every teen driver drives themselves separately, and between Amazon, FedEx, and UPS, half our consumer goods gets dropped off at home too. | |
