| In my family there were four kids,2 went off to college then moved out of state,only spent a few days a year in Iowa for last 50 years,I farmed and worked at the Deere factory,bought a couple of small chunks of land even though my parents aid it was overpriced and odd shaped,but it went up in value.The sister who stayed local was an accountant and built a house on an old set of buildings that my parents had.
The two that stayed local split the land,we spent the last 20 years running after our parents,and will keep it in our families,(one nephew farms part time and will eventually farm mine,) as my parents would have wanted.If land had been 4,000 an acre the out of state relatives would have been happy with the cash they got ,When I tried to explain that creek pasture doesn't bring 20,000 an acre and the return on 160 acres of poor ground that is rented out isn't a huge amount .It doesn't bother me one bit that I got more than a sibling I see 2 days a year.
One of the out of state sisters really tried to cut me out of my parents will,said she needed money worse and really loved an 80 my parents had ,but she already has 2 houses that are bigger and newer than mine | |
