Paper currency is backed by faith in the issuer. As long as we keep paying the interest on our debt, or find some creative way to abrogate that interest, our paper currency is fine. There are probably some pretty sharp Nobel prize types along with their quantum computers pouring over this for last decade, either looking at the most likely non-lethal exit strategy or on the flip side, how to make Soros’s action look minuscule.
