Scranton | While I realize this is yet another TDS post, I will say that the tariffs did help at least one group of farmers. It gave Organic corn a quick 10% boost when it really needed it. It had fallen at or below $7 as it had been getting hammered by cheap imports of sometimes questionable origin and certification. Last spring/summer we got a boost up 10% that my buyers attributed to the tariffs.
Now that is not why I supported the tariffs, or at least I wasn't against them. I took a wait and see approach from the beginning because my entire farming career I have watched China take advantage/manipulate of our markets while openly stealing our technology without any repercussions. Didn't know if tariffs were going to fix any of that, but at least it was something to attempt to rebuke China. Of course all the internet ag exprets have blamed the tariffs for our prices, even tho soy prices were up vs a year ago under Biden. | |
