Subject: RE: Moldboard Plowing

Central PA
Intentional selective tillage at the right time for problem weed species can really help, but we need to consider and study the weed life cycle more closely.

moldboard plowing once in 4-5 year rotation with same number of species with a crop/ cover crop plowdown can keep OM very stable. i have seen it over 20 years holding 5+% OM.
annual tillage for 2summer annuals (corn and beans) is a rescipe for weeds and soil degridation

the rollover plow eliminates the dead furrow problem, and good euro plows leave a field a one pass finishing job.

timing with cool/ cold soils in heavier ground is also the best conditions. annual moldboard can ruin OM. history tells us that.
