No one really knows how brutal the 80's were unless you lived it.
The memories of the 80's has probably cost me some opportunities in my hesitancy to become overleveraged.
The same here..Lots of friends and neighbors didnt survive the 1980's...There was a terrible drought in 1980 and lots only got a wheat crop...1981 was as wet as 1980 was dry...I lost lots of wheat in 1981 to the mud..It shattered out before we could cut it..Crop insurance amounted to nothing...Most of the ones that were forced out farmed from 800 to 1500 acres and lost it all..6 years of bad weather, recent purchases of high priced land and machinery, plus high interest rates-etc did them in..They never farmed again..About half ended up trucking...Memories of those days stick in your mind forever..
Around 25 years ago the neighbors place about 1 mile away sold at auction..I had once farmed it and farmed family ground across the road from it..I had always wanted it,but it brought lots more that what everyone thought it would..I was 3rd to last bidder and was already $250 per acre higher than I wanted to go.Its a good thing I didnt get it as a couple of years later the wife became ill and she had to retire early from a great paying job..It would have stretched us thin..Thanks to inflation I could easily write a check today for what it sold for..I drive by it today with no regrets as we live very comfortably in our retirement..Today it would easily sell for nearly 4 times more than what it sold for..
