Right or wrong- I gently wiggle the filter side to side as I spin it on. Usually there is enough clearance in the threads the filter will rock back and forth a bit.
When I feel that "wiggle" start to go away- I figure the gasket/O-ring is most likely touching the sealing surface. Then do the additional turn.
Ugh tighten your filters.
