I hate when guys say just put the filter on hand tight. Drives me insane. Put a damn wrench on that thing and make sure it’s tighter than “hand tight”. I know I know everyone will come on here commenting all I ever do is hand tight and blah blah blah blah. Loose filters drive me insane about as bad as leaving the fuel cap off. So today backed the blower tractor out of the shop and all was good let it sit outside for 2 hrs. Came back and started it up and fuel spraying out the side of the hood. Quick shut tractor off and wouldn’t you know it loose fuel filter. I just quickly hand tightened it to get it to stop leaking and went and started tractor again to quickly get it in the shop and wouldn’t you know it transmission too cold to move so had to wait for that to warm up and while that’s going on it starts leaking again because now the seal is blown out from being too loose to start with. All the while I am cold and grumpy at this point because someone thinks they have to only “hand “ tighten filters. Put a wrench on it for crying out loud. My rant for the day.

Or... a radical suggestion here:

Follow the filter instructions and if it still leaks tighten until it doesn't

Squashing the seal/oring doesn't help anything and can make your problem a lot worse. There is a reason why filters have instructions on them, like "+3/4" or "A to D".

Oh here comes the experts. I have done the proper way of tightening before like it says on filter and sometimes they just don’t feel right or tight enough. Seems like every manufacturer is a little different. So I go beyond and have no issues. Little more to the story this tractor i just got this fall and it came from the dealership with all the services done and filters changed. Guessing the trained techs followed instructions and still came loose? Put a wrench to it is my comment.

So it is safe to assume this is a documentary of you changing filters every year, especially the 9:30 mark?

A machine doesn't care about your feelings. Did it leak or didn't you try it? An oil filter is like gaskets and seals, for example an IH 466 valve cover requires something like 12 inch pounds, not foot pounds, inch pounds. Any more and it leaks everywhere. 12 inch pounds is basically finger tight.

At most dealerships I've seen, oil changes on things like tractors are relegated to the new guy, who may be there to mostly wash tractors.

Also, what dealership? Did you tell them?
