Middlesex County, Ontario | I have always carried way too much recovery stuff.
On my end I use a simple 2” hitch (also works for pulling wagons) and a 5 ton pin shackle.
In between I use a 7/8” 20’ kinetic rope. These really are magic compared to anything else. If you don’t know about kinetic recovery ropes, get on YouTube and watch some videos. They stretch, which allows you to get a bit of a run, without any sharp jarring. The momentum of the run gets the stuck vehicle moving, you aren’t relying on your own traction as much.
On their end I carry a spare 2” hitch and 5 ton pin shackle. I also carry a few soft shackles, which can go around chrome tow hooks without scratching anything, and won’t kill anyone if they come loose.
I also carry a 20’ strap. It’s what I used to use. The kinetic recovery rope is 10x better. I could elongate the kinetic rope with the strap and soft shackles.
I also carry a 3/8” 20’ chain, big 15” J recovery hook like what a tow truck would have, rtj cluster hook set, axle straps, more pin shackles. I don’t know why I carry some of this stuff anymore. I guess a holdover from when I daily drove a Jeep with a winch.
Cut up windshield wiper jugs keep the dirt contained.
I’ve pulled 3 pickups out of ditches this year so far.
