Leading edge openers usually don't need anything in front of them. Used to run a 950 Cyclo with nothing but cleaners to push the big lumps out of the way, normally they would barely turn.

Went to a White for the better spacing, and it worked well pertty much as-is, did similar, just ran openers to move over the big clods, worked well most of the time untl we went to no-tilling into wheat stubble or old alfalfa ground, then had trouble getting the openers to penetrate in the hard spots. Now we run frame mounted coulters with depth wheels set to have the coulter run about 1/2 inch shallower than the openers, and have yet to run into anything it would not plant into yet.
