Subject: RE: Moving a 40x60 barn

lake Michigan shore line/Mason county
I have moved a few buildings, here is what I have seen. using skids can suck if 1 skid hits a stone or something to cause it to skid a pinch harder than the other skids. You twist / tweak the building. Ours didn't live. We moved a 38/60 pole barn 4 miles down a paved road by sliding 40 foot I beams cross ways wide with two 3 axle flat utility trailers under it. One with a draw bar facing forward. One with the hitch sticking out the back. We pulled the barn with a 4020, we had a loader tractor following bumping the hitch right or left as needed like steering a boat rutter. Drove about 6-8 miles an hour. By being able to steer the rear of the building we pulled into its new home the same as pulling in with a semi trailer. Hardest part was keeping azzholes from going around the pickups with flashing lights. Guy who did the thinking for this job said the fine for moving was way less than permits. Also said if the cops show up they will not make you take it back or make you stop. They will help you get to where you are going as quickly as possible. We had a guy standing on the roof with a DRY handled hay fork wearing rubber gloves and dry knee high barn boots. When we came to a power line to house that was a little low he would lift it up a little while I snuck under it. Trick was having enough help on the ground to always keep talking to the tractor driver to direct him of what was needed to be done. CB radios worked well back then.
