Subject: RE: Buying a used vehicle

SW OH
Every time I've tried to bargain by offering a lower price than they are asking, they look at me like I have 2 heads. Some salesman even get offended if I offer less. Some get down right rude. I've been asked if I try and offer less for a gallon of gasoline.

My wife and I drove 3 hours to look at a Jeep she really wanted. She talked to the salesman the day before on the phone. They put her name on the windshield with sale pending on it. We got there about 1 pm on a Saturday. It was 2 years old and had 50,000 miles on it. It was a little rough looking. Many scratches and small dings. The drivers seat and floorboard showed a lot of wear and tear. It pulled bad too the right and after hitting a bump it had a bad death wobble. I tried to talk my wife out if it, but no, it had all the options she wanted and it was purple. They were asking $45,000 for it and we offered $40,000 cash, today. The salesman did not even understand the offer and had to get the manager. The manager told us the price was clearly advertised and that's that, take it or leave it. I was ready to go but my wife kept trying to deal. The manager pretty much chewed us out for wasting their time and possibly losing a sale to someone who looked at it earlier that morning that wanted it but they were holding it for us. On the way home we stopped and bought a new one 20 miles from home for $46,000.
