I agree with everything you said. There is too much money getting thrown at ag right now, especially with no strings attached. As tax payers with no ties to agriculture, people are wondering why the farmers are getting all this money. The conservation practices being incentivized are things consumers want to see the farmer put into practice and will bring better optics to the payments. In an area like mine with farmers having another long stretch of fall, the extra trips across the field was nuts. "I want it to be smoother for next spring" or "another pass will give me a better chance at more bushels next year" is the mentality in this area and very few think no-till, strip-till or covers work. I have implemented these practices for two decades and nobody is jumping on the wagon saying this is great. But some farmers are looking for money and if these programs gets them to try something different, then maybe more eyes will be opened to the reality that we can be better stewards of the land and reduce costs at the same time. That all being said, I believe that ag payments are doing more to keep input costs and profits propped up for input suppliers and machinery dealers.
