North Central Illinois | This is exactly where the moldboard plow shines. Bury the seeds from weed species that germinate close to the surface and have poor resistance to decay. Foxtail and water hemp are squarely in that category. Keep on top of them enough that you don't need to plow again for as long as possible and you increase the odds of success.
I plowed down a point row corner of a field with a similar issue for my brother to plant a vegetable garden. Very low weed pressure, but there were some escapes in a couple beds that got out of hand. Plowed again that fall and next spring we were back to same pressure as before I plowed the first time. Where I plow 5+ years apart I primarily fight velvet leaf and jimson weed. | |
