Temperature at time of tillage to me makes a big difference. There's near zero microbial or fungal activity when soil temperature is below 50°F which is when most tillage in the Great White North is done both Fall and Spring. With cold soil, there's no burning up of carbon by the little critters with the flush of oxygen from tillage.
