southern MN | A long long time ago, one of the farm magazines had a front cover story on feeding plastic chips to cattle. The idea was that there isn’t much feed value in roughage, if you filter out the chips and reuse them it was cheaper than hauling in grinding hay and hauling out manure. The chips took the place of the roughage. They were kind of saddle shaped.
This thread brings that article to mind. Would have been Successful Farmer or Farm Journal. It seemed so very odd that fake roughage would be better than real grass. To that grade school kid who really didn’t know much at all about animal nutrition so many decades ago.
But it was said to be the coming thing.
