Eastern NE KS | When the auctions cut groups down 5-7 cows it is difficult to know how many producers are selling weanlings and buying bred replacements.
If folks are just buying replacements, the herd adsorbs the added overhead to buy time. Is $1400 / head too much? I don't know. Dad liked to buy. I like to build.
In his time a young yearling was worth more the the 1.5 year old open heifer, so he avoided that. I like selecting and knowing my cow herd.
I think both systems work when you average into the herd. I have cows working to 12-14 years. I keep trying to have more of those but when you turn that slow, progress is slow to change too.
How do you guys that are saying breds are too expensive like keeping a $2000-2200 weanling? She is expensive too. I like it for the genetic knowledge and my opportunity cost + development expenses build over time and not in one gulp.
