It can be as cheap or expensive as you want to make it. I’m in the fringe and get anywhere from 6-15T per acre depending on the rains that year. Seed is just rr silage corn, $55 an acre. No resistance here yet, so just use rup and dicamba. Chopping lineup is a 4440, 3960 w/3row, 12’ dump wagon, 1970 c60, and a 950 versatile w/14’ jd blade. I spare no expense when it comes to preventative maintenance and we’ve had years with less than 5 hours of downtime on 320acres. Doesn’t always work that way, sometimes we’ll have to wait 3 days for parts too.

As for labor, have done it with 2 people. One chops while the other trucks, get 10-15 loads in and one person can go check livestock and chore while the other packs; Rinse and repeat. 3 people is getting stuff done and makes the day go much smoother.

On the flip side you can hire everything done and say it’s way too expensive to silage corn compared to using your paid for haying equipment while paying yourself $0/hr. As long as you’re a profitable operation at the end of the day, keep doing what works for your situation.
