I know a guy (family) that did this for years, made good money doing it. Spent two days a week all winter putting together odd lots at two sale barns. Back grounded them then ran them on grass as yearlings. The ugly ones he fed out and the really ugly ones they ate. His eight and nine weight yearlings sold right up there with most. But when bought were $10-$20 and more back.
