Subject: RE: How Cheap is Corn Silage?

Driftless SW Wisconsin
I understand that. That's my point. Silage may work for the large operation but it is a different situation for someone with 25 cows. I don't expect a custom guy to do me a favor, I want him to make money, actually both of us to make money. And that's not going to happen with corn silage on a small herd. I make my own hay. However it is much easier to find someone to make custom hay or baleage than it is to find someone to do custom corn silage on a few acres. Or just put up a hay shed and buy all of your hay. The answer to the original post also varies widely depending on your location. Here in SW WI we can usually raise good hay and good corn so what is most profitable really depends highly on the size of your operation.
