Have you considred all the labor and fuel that goes into making hay? You get to drag a haybine, rake, baler and pick bales 4 times for 5 tons of alfalfa. Meanwhile 1 harvesting operation gives 25 tons of corn silage. 5 tons of hay at 15% moisture is #8500 of dry matter at about 60%tdn. 25 tons of silage at 65% moisture is #17500 dry matter at 70% tdn. So i can produce over twice the feed on an acre of silage than an acre of hay. On the feeding end i think the reduced waste propably covers the cost of my tmr mixer vs bale rings. So yes silage is cheap feed
