I don't think you're stupid. I do think that you need to clean the head out and see how they work. Once I realized how they are designed, 95% of my feeding problems went away. I still have issues with my original gun I converted to cornhead grease only but it's issue is with how runny the grease is and only using it once a year. I bought a replacement because of the same issues you are having and had lost the ability to push on the rod to force grease up into the head. (pushed too hard ).
