What’s the typical APH for dryland corn in SE Colorado and SW Kansas? \

SW KS is sure better than here. But we'll hit a lick/100 bpa every now and then. We haven't gone hog wild planting dryland corn.........but do it when we start with decent moisture, like this year. We have some fields with APHs now of 60+. Some in the 40s. We have had a couple of almost zero years or it would be better. Wheat APHs are horrid, with all of the zeros included. A few times that's been right at the end from hail.

Overall, like the guy from Oklahoma says, we really don't spend anymore money putting corn in than we do wheat or milo. Typically at 50 bpa the extra seed cost over Milo is covered by the basis bonus. This year that number is more at like 30 bpa. Also, harvest this time of year is much less stressful than in the middle of the year during wheat harvest time. Just lots going on then.

And yah, it really helps that we can insure dryland corn. Every year even, with no fallow. Wheat has to be fallowed to qualify. I'd hope for your case that surely dryland corn will eventually become insurable. The hybrids today are just SO much better than 20 years ago. Last year we had a great start, than never had another rain after the end of July. Our corn wasn't even tasseled yet. It then tasseled, pollinated, and filled with NO help from mother nature. Our worst field was 18. Had some in the 30s. Best went 56. Stubble backed one qtr that went 40 last year.........haven't cut it yet..........but it looks like it'll beat 60 this year.
