Subject: RE: N-serve

Central Nebraska

Nebraska has numerous Natural Resource Districts broken out mostly by different watersheds and originally setup by the State.  Each one is governed by an elected board of directors from the district.  They monitor/regulate all things natural resource related but mostly we hear about and deal with water levels and water quality.  They have the ability to make rules and regulations.  The NRD I farm in does not allow us to apply nitrogen until November 1.  Any fall applied NH3 must have a district approved inhibiter/stabilizer used with it.  We also must pull and report deep (24") soil samples for any corn on corn rotations AND are required to use a University nitrogen calculator.  It creates a lot of extra work and as producers we often prove them wrong.  Their calculators are based on farming practices and expectations from the 70s and 80s.  We tend to be a little more efficient now!
