Really? What exactly has been done to unwind consolidation in the packing industry? There have been attempts to start some small regional packing plants, but nothing has been done to reduce the 80 to 85 percent of the market the big four control.
I'm with you, Keith.
It seems to me, the big winner in all this is going to be JBS Swift. They own a LOT of packing plants in Argentina (as well as in the USA). Look to who traditionally makes the most $$$ on a steer, and to no surprise, it is the packer. You only have to go back a few years to find a place in time where the packer's PROFIT was more than the cattleman got for his steer. Funny how back then, there was no government intervention to lower beef prices, only now, when the cattleman is the one making the $$$.
The packers have had their way in most of the other meats, look at poultry, pork, etc. I think they see this as their chance to take over the beef industry, or at least a way to keep the lion's share of the profits. | |
