Southwest Iowa | Its pretty discouraging when it looks like soybeans will rally only to drop on the announcement of imports into the southeastern US but farmers have proven they will continue to plant corn and soybeans at a loss. The cattle industry is different and a lot of kids out of school dont want any part of it. Way easier to sit in a tractor on autosteer than to deal with a cantankerous old cow at three in the morning. You can sleep right through a wind or hailstorm if you have enough federal crop insurance but with cows a cold rain in March or April and you might be up all night calving. You're on your own. I believe crop insurance is a big part of why the cows have disappeared in our area causing higher cash rents for hay and pasture ground. I'm afraid with recent damage thats happened in the market could only discourage expansion even more. | |
