 | I crossed a hybrid off the list once that I remember. Sewed oats into insanely heavy stalk and leaf residue and drug the field after discing the oats in. This created piles of residue so deep and frequent that I chose to burn the worst of the "bunches". It was a very dry spring, the wind came up and the whole field caught fire.
I ran for the disc and put the fire out. Interestingly the oats and alfalfa came up thick and fast in the burnt areas, making me wish I'd let the whole field burn. Within a couple of weeks the whole field looked the same from end to end. No harm and no benefit from burning vs. bunching, but perhaps some loss of OM in the burnt patches.
