We have a Lowry 500 bu pit- it's Almost 12 ft deep in ground .I have a Sump pump at 12.5 ft depth. The pit has a 12 inch auger that turns about 200rpm -We dug the hole and set it in ground in 1997- then backfilled around it with 90tons of pea rock. The 12 inch auger flighting was pulled out and replaced after 23 years- still had the original wood block bearing at the bottom. If I was to do this again - I would go with a poured wall " basement " and set an insert in. Agri Steel of Lyle Minn has done 5 or 6 of this style in our area- iv helped with pouring walls on one of them - and some of the millwright work. These are large enough to dump a semi - and hustle back to the field .

Why the basement vs direct if it's made it 23 years already?
