 | My biggest concern with what you said would be lodging potential next summer when it is 6 feet tall and making grain. Sounds like you have excess tillers which all have the potential to make stems and heads next spring. Rye is susceptible enough already to lodging when not super thick. 
 I would definitely graze it off this fall if you have the growth it sounds like you do. I don’t believe you would be hurting your grain yield at all by removing some excess growth now…may actually help yourself make more grain.
