The second year the soybeans were already not getting what you'd call their fair share.

The university data no longer supports the blanket broadcast model.
If you look at University of Minnesota’s current “Nutrient Management for Corn” and “Fertilizing Soybean in Minnesota” bulletins, both say almost the same thing:

Maintain soil test levels within the recommended range. don’t “bank” multiple years’ worth of fertilizer.

For efficient uptake, apply near the time and place the crop needs it.

Banded or in-season applications often outperform fall broadcast in nutrient recovery and yield efficiency. Minnesota has a bunch of bunch of reports on banding over broadcast efficiency and rate reduction.
